About Us

What We Do

Our mission is to offer a competitive and recreational atmosphere in which children with disabilities can have a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Our History

The Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks Basketball Association comes from a long tradition of Junior Wheelchair basketball. In 1979, Variety Wheelchair Arts & Sports Association created the first junior team. The program has had several teams with many different children participating in the program. Several of the children have gone on to compete at the collegiate level hoping to use the knowledge gained in this program as a stepping stone to the Paralympics. In 2006, the Dallas Junior Texans became the Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks in order to unify all the local wheelchair basketball teams: men, women and children.

Our Programs

We offer several different programs:

  • A Futures Team (allowing for more 1:1 instruction)
  • A Prep Team (ages 5-12, 8.5 ft. goal)
  • A 10' Division TeamĀ (ages 13-19, 10 ft. goal)

Our Purpose

The goal of the program is to offer a wheelchair basketball team for children with physical disabilities otherwise not offered in our local community based programs. The benefit of children participating in our wheelchair sports program is quite evident as they develop skills that will help them not only in basketball but in life as well.

The benefits to the children include:

  • social interaction with their peers
  • physical fitness
  • increased self-confidence

We have skilled and trained coaches who volunteer their time and expertise. It is very important to offer the children the opportunity to participate in a competitive and fun environment. We give these children an opportunity to excel and mainstream into society.

The Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks offer wheelchair basketball to kids from ages 5-18 years old.

Seasonal practice is at Bachman Recreation Center at 2750 Bachman Drive, P.O. Box 540112, Dallas, TX 75354 on Saturdays.

Email the League Administrator for specific times.
